Off the beaten track but well worth seeking out, this friendly pub has seen a number of owners in recent years and in April 2026 came into the hands of husband and wife team Ryan and Sarah Rainier who pride themselves in using local produce. There is a large L-shaped bar with a comfortable seating area completed by a log fire and also an extensive restaurant, a patio and a grassed garden overlooking fields, the only part of the premises where smoking is permitted. The pub was built as an estate workers' alehouse by Jane Austen's brother Edward Knight of Chawton House two miles away across the fields. Pamphlets in the pub detail local country walks.
