See more about this pub on WhatPub, CAMRA's national pub guide.

Off the beaten track but well worth seeking out, this friendly pub has seen a number of owners in recent years and on 19 January 2024 became part of the Brakspear chain while keeping the popular existing workforce in place. There is freedom to take two cask ales from independent breweries which is enthusiastically embraced with a constantly changing selection of local microbrewery ales. There is a large L-shaped bar with a comfortable seating area completed by a log fire and also an extensive restaurant, a patio and a grassed garden overlooking fields, the only part of the premises where smoking is permitted. The pub was built as an estate workers' alehouse by Jane Austen's brother Edward Knight of Chawton House two miles away across the fields. Pamphlets in the pub detail local country walks.
